Samsung's first Bada phone with Super AMOLED to be announced on February 14th?

By now you're undoubtedly aware than Samsung has a new smartphone OS (Bada) and touchscreen technology (Super AMOLED) in the works. In this case, putting 2 and 2 together yields 14, a number that matches Samsung's February 14th press event at Mobile World Congress. How so? Well, first of all, Sammy is promoting the Samsung Unpacked teaser page from its Bada site. The ocean-themed teaser ("bada" means "ocean" in Korean) says, "on 2.14 a new mobile from Samsung is born. See it first in Barcelona." A quick look at the teaser site's source reveals the keywords "Bada," "smartphone," and "AMOLED." In other words, you can bet that Samsung will be unveiling a 3.3-inch, 800 x 480 pixel Super AMOLED (already rumored for a next week reveal) touchscreen Bada phone on February 14th.

P.S. The image above comes courtesy of GSM Arena. While the site won't say what the device is on the left it's clearly running Samsung's Bada UI and is likely AMOLED judging by those deep blacks. The display is also slightly smaller than the iPhone 3G's 3.5-inch display. Gee... what could it be?

LG GD900 Crystal

A good measure of how beautiful a phone’s design and overall look truly sets it apart from the crowd is how random people around you react when you whip it out. Ot’s never a bad thing when someone strikes up a conversation with you to find out where you bought the thing, and during my time with the LG GD900 Crystal, that happened a lot.

The GD900 Crystal, at first glance, looks like any typical touch mobile phone. It has a spacious 3-inch capacitive touchscreen and is decked out in a tasteful silver finish. The real draw to thus particular beauty is when you slide out the keypad. The whole keypad is transparent, and the GD900 Crystal is the first mobile to have that particular feature. Tje keypad lights up in a faint blue light which is enough to see the printed numbers on the keypad and lends a kind of 3D effect to it. There are soft keys set right above the keypad set in a metallic gray finish. The volume rocker and camera shortcut key is set on the right side of the unit, as well as the microSD card slot that’s revealed when the keypad is slid down. The charger/data/headphone combination slot is on the right side of the unit, and the 8-megapixel camera delivers the goods with autofocus and a LED flash.

Anchoring the unique design of the GD900 is the Touch S-Class UI. The icons are large and are labeled clearly. so users won’t have problems getting in and out of submenus. The GD900 also features an accelerometer that automatically rotates the display according to the orientation of the phone from portrait to landscape. The home screen of the GD900 is broken down into four categories: shortcuts, widgets, contacts and multimedia. Each category can be customized to include user’s favorites, and switching from one screen to the other is achieved by simply swiping a finger across the screen.

The transparent keypad isn’t just there for looks and has limited multi-touch functionality. When browsing the web, you can use it ala trackpad, and combined with the handwriting recognition software in the GD900, it can be used as a handwriting platform for screens that require input. As mentioned previously, the GD900 is armed with an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus. Pictures shot with it are relatively clear and crisp, although the LED flash really doesn’t do well under low light situations. Going through pictures in your gallery is as easy as swiping your finger. Music lovers might balk at the lack of a 3.5mm audio jack, but the included hands-free kit has a 3.5mm jack that you can plug your headphones into if you wish.

Call quality is good, and I’ve yet to experience a single dropped call. Calls from, and to the GD900 are clear. I usually issues with phones that don’t have raised keys, but the haptic feature in the GD900 gave me enough feedback to know I’ve pressed a button. Battery life was around a day and a half with a few calls, constant texts and a music track or two.

The only issue I had with the GD900 was with the way it handled contacts, as going through the 300 plus or so contacts I had wasn’t the smoothest experience I’ve had so far. This also translates to the messaging screen when you choose a recipient for your SMS messages.

ITG now accepting xpPhone preorders with choice of AT&T, Orange, or Vodafone

Xpphone_open

In preparation for its global launch, China's In Technology Group (ITG) has just launched a redesigned English website and is now accepting unpriced preorders for the Computex-revealed xpPhone. Trumpeted by the company as the "world's first mobile phone that runs Windows XP," the AMD-powered slider hasn't undergone any notable changes—cosmetically or otherwise—since it was last seen, so all the specs you've previously committed to memory are still intact.

Xpphone_closed

That means the xpPhone is still all about what you see below:

Xpphone_specs

The SSD and HDD options you see listed are apparently not an either-or choice, with ITG asserting that the device supports both drives at the same time (the SSD to "help save power" and the HDD for the "full internet experience") and can even be used as a portable hard disk when the system shuts down.

Xpphone_3

More interesting than the specs, the seven major advantages, or even the nine major technologies involved with the xpPhone, however, is the fact that it "supports the global three major 3G standards."

Xpphone_preorder

To prove it, the preorder page requires you to choose your "3G module" from a drop-down menu that lists Vodafone, AT&T, and Orange. Why the same xpPhone isn't able to support all the necessary 3G frequency bands on its own is unclear, but the use of the carriers' names at least bodes well for those in the US and Europe who hoped the phone would be available outside of China.

Xpphone_diagram

I asked my contact at ITG for pricing info and a global release date and was told that I'd be notified immediately when such details were ready for public consumption. I was also told that the final product will be "more thin and sharp," so although we don't know when or for how much, at least we know to expect the xpPhone to be sporting a new look the next time it makes an appearance.

nokia n900

The 1320mAh Li-Ion battery does seem a little low for a smartphone like this considering the earlier E71/E63/E72 already have 1500mAh. Would be pretty interesting how the Linux-based Maemo 5 OS will perform. Will be available later this year with a suggested retail price north of Php35,000.

New releases from Nokia X3 and X6

At Nokia World 2009 were presented two new phone line with the index X (short XpressMusic) - touchscreen smartphone X6 and a slider with an index of X3. Both of them should appear on sale later this year. Nokia X3 main features of the slider - working with the radio without a wired headset, 2.2 inch display with 320x240 resolution, 3-megapixel camera, memory card support up to 16 gigabytes, the possibility of charging from USB (there is a standard 2-mm charger connector) and integration with web services OVI. Expected price is at level 540 (!) And 140 euros for, respectively, the model X6 and X3. Frankly, the price for the X6 looks quite pessimistic, despite its built 32 gigabytes of memory.

Nokia N86 8MP Slider Phone

The new Nokia N86 8MP has just been officially unveiled. This landmark Nseries is the first Nokia phone to break the 8 megapixel camera mark. But the N86 8MP is by no means playing simple megapixel war games - this serious point ‘n’ shoot camera phone launches laden with top performance photography credentials such as a Carl Zeiss Tessar optics and a host of smart photo sharing talents.

Read on for full details of the new Nokia N86 8MP, and get clicking through our close-up photo gallery of Nokia’s first 8 megapixel camera.

Alongside its talent for capturing ultra high-resolution shots at up to 8 megapixels, the Nokia N86 8MP comes loaded with 8GB of internal flash memory, enabling it to stomach around 4,000 snaps. Built with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics at its core, the N86 8MP features a lens that’s in the same league as the sort of wide angle 35mm lens you’d find on an SLR camera. Likewise, the lens has been engineered to offer sharper image contrast and better colour representation.

The Nokia N86 8MP features a super vibrant OLED QVGA screen that measures in at 2.6-inches, making it an ideal window for showcasing your shots. However, this 8 megapixel S60-powered Nseries is more keenly focussed on enabling you to share you photos further afield via services such as Share on Ovi and Flickr. Plus, it comes with onboard Assisted GPS, geared towards letting you geo-tag your photographs with location info before you share them. Its GPS talents are also exploited for satnav action and location-based services such as Nokia Maps 3.0 which comes pre-installed on the device.

N-Gage ready, the N86 8MP doubles as a full-blown entertainment handset. As well as being a premium pocket games machine, it’s a music player with a standard 3.5mm headphone socket and FM transmitter for sending songs wirelessly to your in-car stereo. It’s OLED screen is also perfectly suited for video playback (up to 7 hours), and like the N96 has a handy kickstand.

Click through our gallery of photos of the Nokia N86 8MP, to get a close-up look at Nokia’s first 8 megapixel handset. And let us know what you think about it in the comments section further down.

Nokia sells 1 million 5800 XpressMusic phones

Over the weekend, Nokia announced that they have just shipped the 1 million Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phones making it one of their more successful phones to date.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic: 1 Million customers served and counting

Even though it hasn’t been released all over the globe, impressive sales in particular regions like Hong Kong, Moscow and no doubt, the Philippines as well has helped the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic attain this feat at such a short amount of time. This, in turn, will no doubt raise even more comparison to Apple’s equally successful mobile phone, the iPhone. So, is the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone the real iPhone-killer?

Sony Ericsson announces C510 Cybershot, W508 Walkman phones

Sony Ericsson fans will be happy to know that a new Cybershot phone as well as a Walkman phone are confirmed to debut this year.

Sony Ericsson C510The Sony Ericsson C510 is a 3.2-megapixel Cybershot phone that comes with a 2.2-inch TFT scratch-resistant display, Bluetooth, Google Maps, direct YouTube upload, slide-in lens cover, and 100MB internal memory. It likewise features Smile Shutter, Face Detection and Photo Fix. It’ll be available in the 1Q of this year in two color options: Radiation Silver and Future Black. Price is yet to be known, but it expected to be more on the affordable side.

Sony Ericsson W508Meanwhile, the W508 is the new Walkman phone to watch out for. It’s a clamshell that features a 2.2-inch internal scratch-resistant display, a 1.1-inch monochromatic OLED external scratch-resistant display, 3.2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, NetFront browser, 100MB internal memory and a 1GB Memory Stick Micro as part of the package. Palm debuts Palm Pre, WebOS platform

During the recently concluded CES in Las Vega, Palm finally unveiled their latest smartphone, the Palm Pre.

Palm Pre with WebOS

Taking a new approach in designing this smartphone, the Palm Pre integrates a slide-out QWERTY keypad to complement its 3.1-inch touchscreen display which is not usually common in Palm devices. It likewise features a 3-megapixel camera with flash, HSDPA connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR, proximity and light sensor, accelerometer, 8GB internal memory, and runs on their latest mobile operating system, the WebOS.

Palm Pre

Palm’s new OS is a huge improvement in terms of visual appeal when compared to their earlier applications, but the jury is still out as to how successful as a platform it will be especially when compared to the iPhone and Android. The WebOS makes use of CSS, XHTML and JavaScript making it compatible with a wide variety of applications, and will likewise be able to connect directly to an app store that Palm will be launching soon dubbed as the App Catalog.

Sadly though, only US residents will get a chance to own one during the early part of this year. The Palm Pre will become available sometime during the first half of 2009 exclusively on Sprint. A Palm Pre GSM version for other market is expected to be released once it makes its debut in the US. Hopefully, that will happen sooner than later because the last thing Palm needs is to follow in the footsteps of the XPERIA X1 and lose whatever interest and fan base it has gained during its announcement due to a delayed release.

Nokia’s got a new 8800 iteration on their hands, and this time, it’s clad in 18-carat gold and white leather.

Samsung BlackJack II no. 1 in Consumer Reports’ smartphone survey

Consumer Reports has released their January 2009 issue, and based on their study, the Samsung BlackJack II is the no. 1 smartphone as far as the US market is concerned.

Samsung BlackJack II no. 1 in Consumer Reports' smartphone survey

This QWERTY-equipped Windows Mobile-powered mobile phone managed to beat not only the T-Mobile G1, but also the more popular iPhone 3G. Actually, neither of the two even made it to the top five which was composed of the T-Mobile Wing, Motorola Q9C, T-Mobile Shadow, and BlackBerry Pearl Flip. The first Android-based phone and iPhone both were tied at 6th place. I guess this just goes to show that consumers still value form, function and price over design and hype.

Of course, this listing applies to the US and being in the Philippines, we definitely have our own set of smartphones to choose from. My personal top five picks for local market are as follows (in no particular order):

1. Nokia E71
2. Samsung BlackJack II
3. iPhone 3G
4. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1
5. Motorola Q9

Samsung unveils Luxury GT-S9402 DuoS Phone

If you think the global economic crisis is discouraging mobile phone manufacturers from launching uber-expensive devices for the time being, the recent unveiling of the Samsung Ego GT-S9402 clearly shows that they’re not that affected by it that much.

Samsung Ego GT-S9402

This new phone model from Samsung features an 2-inch QVGA AMOLED display, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus, image stabilization and face and smile detection, FM radio, tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth, 1GB internal memory expandable via microSD card, and is also a DuoS which means you can use two SIM cards on it at the same time. Except for the camera, the specs look pretty average, but what truly makes this model special and expensive is its use of liquidmetal composite alloy which is touted to be much better than titanium in almost all aspects. It may not be a Vertu, but the S9402 definitely provides a more luxurious option to Samsungs already impressive line-up of phones.

It’s expected to cost 1200 EUR or roughly P75K when it becomes available. With such a steep and hefty price tag, I highly doubt you’ll be seeing this in the regular mall stores if ever it does make it to the local market.

Sony XPERIA X1 Official Price, New Panels now Available

I’ve got good news and bad news for all your Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 hopefully owners out there. The good news is that the XPERIA X1 is now available in Sony Ericsson concept stores which means its official price is out as well. The bad news is that it’s higher than what we were expecting. Its SRP is P42500 to be exact; much more expensive than a 3G iPhone 8GB prepaid kit or a Samsung Omnia, but still cheaper than an HTC Touch Pro.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

On a similar note, Sony Ericsson has launched two new panels for the XPERIA X1. The Facebook panel allows users to seamlessly integrate their Facebook account with their mobile phone. It even comes with call to contacts functionality. The Windows Live panel, on the other hand, provides you with an easy way to sync and import your Windows Live contacts to your XPERIA X1’s phonebook. It also gives you an easy access to Windows Live Messenger and Hotmail. These two new exciting panels that will definitely enable you to get the most out of your XPERIA X1.

So now that the XPERIA X1 is finally out, will you be getting yours soon or will you be waiting for something better to come out in 2009?

Nokia 6260 slide: First S40-based Phone with GPS

If you’re looking for a little something more powerful than the budget-friendly phones we previewed last week, the recently launched Nokia 6260 slide might just be the phone for you.

Nokia 6260 slide

It’s set to debut in early 2009 and while it may not be an Nseries phone, it comes with a bunch of features that are commonly associated with multimedia line of Nokia. The Nokia 6260 slide comes with a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and LED flash, WiFi, 3G/HSDPA connectivity up to 10.2 Mbps, and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP. It also comes with GPS with A-GPS making the 6260 slide the first S40-based phone to come with such a feature. Likewise, it has TV-out functionality, stereo speakers and comes with 200MB internal memory and supports microSD card technology for additional storage. Despite its lowly S40 software, the Nokia 6260 is nonetheless a truly full-featured slider that can definitely match up with its heftier Nseries siblings.

Nokia 6260 slide

It’s expected to cost €299 or close to P19K (converted using the current exchange rate) before taxes and subsidies. It seems a bit expensive for an S40 device, but considering the features it comes with, it might just be worth considering.

UPDATE: Sad news guys as this one won’t be relased by Nokia Philippines. Hopefully, something that’s equally delightful (and full-featured) will replace it as part of the 2009 line-up of Nokia phones in the country.
